WELCOME!
The Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons has been in existence for 78 years and has enjoyed annual meetings steeped in tradition and excellence. We are proud of our heritage and our ability to provide excellent continuing education opportunities, support for our residency training programs within the nine-state region and a relaxed atmosphere where our members can visit and collaborate with colleagues and friends.

Please mark your calendars now for our next Annual Meeting, April 2-4, 2009 at The Casa Monica Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida.
For the past several years, our annual membership dues have been capped at $85 per active member. We currently have 246 active members in the society and 75 life/retired members. Your annual membership dues cover the normal operating expenses for the Society. All annual meeting expenses are covered through meeting registration fees and exhibitor sponsorships. After careful assessment of the costs associated with running the Society, the Board of Directors has unanimously approved an increase in the membership dues to $125 per active member.
We have numerous goals to attain in the next few years including: Providing the ability for the membership to host his/her own local study club events for referring dentists with continuing education credits offered by the Southwest Society. We are currently in the process of applying for a National PACE number through the Academy of General Dentistry and hope to roll out this benefit for the membership at our 2009 Annual Meeting.
Additionally, we are currently striving to schedule annual meetings and CE activities at least 3 years in advance so that we may provide our meeting attendees with both Continuing Dental and Continuing Medical education credits.
Also with contracting for meeting events several years prior, we are able to lock in hotel accommodations and activities at today’s rates which enable us to continue to be a good steward of your monies and control meeting registration costs.
We also have begun offering component state societies the opportunity to host their annual meetings in conjunction with the Southwest Society CDE/CME opportunities.
The Board of Directors recently approved a new voluntary contribution fund to help offset the costs of future meeting planning and new membership benefits. This fund, The Legacy Fund, has been established in honor of our past leadership who has worked so hard and diligently to achieve the Society’s goals of promoting and advancing the science of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the fields of education, research, professional service and public relations.
These are exciting times for our Society as we strive to go from good to great and achieve the next level of excellence! We are asking our members to support the society in these new endeavors by voluntarily contributing to the fund in honor of your personal oral and maxillofacial surgical mentor. These honorees will be showcased on our website and during our annual meetings.
We are excited about the growth and the opportunities available to us and look forward to providing new benefits to our membership.
We look forward to honoring your personal mentors and seeing you in St. Augustine in April 2009.
With Kindest Regards,
SOUTHWEST SOCIETY OF ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEONS
